Sgt.
John A. Mytych
Sergeant John A.
Mytych served enlisted in 1933, and served with the 26 Infantry Regiment.
In 1938 he was transferred to the 27th Infantry Regiment, serving at Schofield
Barracks, Honolulu. He returned to the states, transferring to the 16th IR.
He was sent overseas, and was wounded on Tunisia.
His photo album
below contains some interesting and entertaining photos and documents, mostly
from his days in Hawaii.
His Purple Heart
is a rare piece, as it is an officially engraved medal to a WIA. Mytych
had already returned to the US by the time the medal was issued, thus he
received it directly from the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot, rather than an
award in the field.
Mytych's Bronze
star is typical of the engraving seen on 1947 Combat Infantry conversion
awards.
